Description:

Roman, Imperial to Byzantine Period, ca. 1st to 5th century CE. A fine collection of Roman, marine-themed artifacts: a lead seal featuring a dolphin surrounded by an ancient Greek inscription, a carved-shell pendant in the form of a dolphin, and 2 Roman shell weights - made of bronze and the other of leaded bronze. The Romans even referred to the Mediterranean as "Mare Nostrum" meaning "our sea." Size of largest (seal): 2.3" Diameter (5.8 cm)

Provenance: private Charlotte, North Carolina, USA collection; ex-Joel Malter, California, USA, acquired before 2004
