Native American, central/midwestern/southeastern United States, Mississippian (found in Aiken County, South Carolina) and Eastern Woodlands, ca. 500 to 1500 CE. A fine selection of 4 hand-carved stone artifacts including 3 Mississippian celts and 1 Eastern Woodlands axe head. The 3 celts are of slender forms with rounded butt ends and tapered blade edges, each carved from either mottled gray, white, and pink stone, brown and beige stone, or smooth green-brown stone. The axe head exhibits a sharpened blade edge, smooth faces, a thick butt end, and a three-quarters groove around the body that served as a hand grip or binding recess. Size (axe head): 3.6" L x 1.4" W x 2" H (9.1 cm x 3.6 cm x 5.1 cm); (largest celt): 4.25" L x 1.8" W (10.8 cm x 4.6 cm)

  • Condition: Axe head has chips and small losses to upper portion of butt end as shown; all 3 celts are intact and very good. Each piece has light abrasions and nicks commensurate with age, with some surface roughness on the 2 smaller celts. Nice surface smoothness on largest celt and axe head. Old collection label on verso of largest celt.
