Description:

Native American, Southeastern United States, Eastern Woodland and Mississippian cultures, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. This is a superb collection of stone and shell gorgets and pendants that are hand-drilled and polished. The materials used include banded slate, sandstone, a mottled white stone, and a shell with nacre iridescence. The petite limestone and banded slate stones were both pecked into a blade or celt shape; a curved edge opposite a single drilled perforation to use as pendants. The shell gorget is perforated with 2 suspension holes along the expanded top, and the surface is polished to show off the silvery iridescence which must have been prized as an adornment. The last stone is also double pierced with a slightly expanded edge. These stone gorgets and pendants were likely ornamentation to be worn around the neck or through the hair with a stick. The stones may have been chosen from a riverbed as naturally polished accessories that could function as symbols of status. Size of largest: 4.25" L x 1.75" W (10.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
