Description:

Near East / Western Asia, Parthia, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A striking and unusual openwork vessel with a basket-like form: an interior closed chamber and an exterior with cut-out triangular openings to imitate woven material. A thick loop handle is at the top and the entire surface has a pale blue-green glaze, much of which remains, especially on the body. Vessels like this one were likely inspired by Chinese pottery that Parthian artisans would have seen traveling on the Silk Roads - both overland and maritime. Parthian pottery has been found in India, Sri Lanka, and other areas that traded with this region. Glazed wares like this one are likely from northern Parthia. Size: 4.75" W x 6.15" H (12.1 cm x 15.6 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; Ex D.K. a NY collector acq 2000s from Barakat Gallery Jerusalem and with a COA that states the vase was found in Jerusalem, item no t.908.
