Description:

Ancient Seas, North America, Maryland, Calvert Cliffs / Calvert Formation, Miocene period, ca. 15 million years ago. An exciting collection of 31 fossilized teeth from prehistoric sharks of various species and tooth shapes! The enamel and roots are well preserved, with some areas of mineral and marine encrustations- the lustrous enamel is a natural part of the fossilization process, the colors developed due to the chemicals and minerals present in the environment. The Calvert Formation is famously fossiliferous; about 2 dozen species of shark teeth can be found in this area! Expert shark or fossil examination could likely identify each tooth in full- possible shark families represented in this collection include: Mako, Galeocerdo (relative to tiger sharks), and Carcharodon hastalis (relative to great white sharks). Each tooth is mounted on a leather backing and displayed in a modern glass case, ready to be displayed. Size (largest tooth): 2" L x 1.25" W (5.1 cm x 3.2 cm); (case): 11.8" L x 1.75" W x 15" H (30 cm x 4.4 cm x 38.1 cm)
