Description:

United States, Hawaiian Islands, Honolulu, ca. 1999 CE. This is the 3-volume 1999 edition of "Fornander Collection of Hawaiian Antiquities and Folklore" Volumes IV, V, VI, published by Ai Pohaku Press. An unrivaled collection of ancient Hawaiian stories and history collected by Abraham Fornander (1812-1887), a Swedish born ethnologist. Fornander enlisted bilingual Hawaiian speakers to record and translate oral histories and knowledge that might otherwise be overlooked by Europeans. After Fornander's death, his papers and journals were sold to Charles Reed Bishop, the founder of the Bishop Museum. The collection was finally published as part of a series of books titled "Memoirs of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum" between 1916 to 1920. The complete "Fornander Collection" is represented by these 3 books with chapters in both English and Hawaiian, an invaluable reference text for those interested in Hawaiian history and tradition.
