Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, late 18th to early 19th century CE. A fabulous trio of Spanish Colonial wooden framed mirrors, each one finely carved, beautifully painted, and similar in form to the tabernacle frames created for private devotional compositions in Venice during the 16th century. All three are decorated with elaborate stylized acanthus leaves throughout, extending flourishes on each side, and a crowning central shield-like ornament at the top. These decorative motifs are further embellished with gold and red painted gesso, perhaps inspired by European pastiglia (applied ornamental gesso decoration). Such mirrors were more than likely very popular during their day; however, they are difficult to come by today - especially as a matching ensemble. Size of one (they are identical in size except one has a foot): 12.5" W x 15.3" H (31.8 cm x 38.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired prior to 1990
