Jose Ortega (1921-1990). Three mixed media works entitled "San Pachuco", "Check Out the Lowrider Ese", and "Chicas Platicando" - all ca. 1960 and all signed within the composition. A wonderful trio of mixed media works by Jose Ortega depicting vibrant Chicano themes set in matching hand-painted frames. "San Pachuco" points to Pachuco culture, generally associated with stylish men of a counterculture associated with zoot suits and jazz, a dialect known as calo, and a rejection of assimilation into American society. Ortega's Pachuco stands with his hands in his pockets and his feet crossed, casually leaning against a lime green car. He wears an equally colorful ensemble - an aqua blue zoot suit with a purple chain dangling from his belt, an orange dress shirt, a large cross pendant hanging over his purple tie, and a wide brimmed aqua and purple hat. A red stamp of the Virgin Mary embellishes the lower right corner, and Ortega signed just above the vehicle's tire. The frame is painted a gleaming copper hue adorned by bright yellow, blue, green, and orange dots. "Chicas Platicando" translates to "Women Talking," and in this composition, Ortega presents a group of young ladies dressed in colorful clothes, busily chatting with one another. In addition, a red stamp presents the glyph-like head of a mythical being above the group, and Ortega signed the work on the lower left beside the woman wearing an orange skirt and holding a green purse. The piece is set in a matching painted frame behind glass.
Finally, "Check Out the Low Rider Ese" completes the trio, depicting a crowd admiring a slick magenta and violet lowrider. The word "Ese" in the title is a slang Chicano term similar to "dude" or "homeboy". In this piece, Ortega has signed across the waistline of the man wearing an orange shirt. It too is set in a beautiful hand-painted frame that matches the others of this ensemble.
