Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful ensemble of 3 ancient intaglios: one of citrine displaying an erotic scene and 2 of carnelian featuring Mercury - Greek Hermes - the Roman god of commerce and communication. Ovoid in form, the citrine intaglio exhibits a nude, ithyphallic male with a nude female kneeling before him. Alternatively, the carnelian intaglios show the head of Mercury in a winged helmet facing left and a nude Mercury in stride, wearing his winged helmet and holding his caduceus. Size of largest (citrine erotic scene): 1" L x 0.6" W (2.5 cm x 1.5 cm)
