Description:

South America, Bolivia / Peru, Aymara / Quechua culture, ca. 20th century CE. A collection of 3 handwoven textiles - a poncho and mantle blankets, that likely use a blend of synthetic and wool from sheep and possibly alpaca. The poncho is made of two separate panels, each sewn together at the midpoint, with a small slit in the center through which one's head would fit. The rectangular mantles are usually worn by women and held in place by pins and /or belted at the waist. In the late 19th and throughout the 20th century, Andean weavers developed a strong preference for newly introduced chemical dyes and pre-spun synthetic fibers, associating their usage with wealth. Factory-produced yarn was much more costly than homespun wool, but the irresistible array of vibrant colors, unattainable with natural dyes, fueled a significant demand. Size of poncho: 62" L x 60.5" W (157.5 cm x 153.7 cm)

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004
