Description:

North America, ca. millions of years old. This collection features three pyrite specimens, two of which are adorned with clusters of white quartz crystals. The quartz crystals protrude from the larger pyrite cube, a formation that occurs when pyrite crystals grow in the spaces between or along the surfaces of quartz. The largest specimen is entirely composed of pyrite, with its cubic formations being completely natural. Pyrite crystals form in a cube shape due to the specific arrangement of iron and sulfur atoms, creating a strikingly artistic geometric appearance that enhances their appeal. The beautiful shine of pyrite closely resembles gold to the untrained eye, earning it the nickname "fool's gold." Size of largest: 5" L x 2.3" W x 2.25" H (12.7 cm x 5.8 cm x 5.7 cm); weight: 636.8 grams

Provenance: private Constance McCormick Fearing estate, Montecito, California, USA, acquired before 2004
