Description:

Native American, central/midwestern United States, Eastern Woodlands, ca. 1000 BCE to 1000 CE. A nice gathering of 3 quixotic stone artifacts from ancient North America. First is an ovoid gorget of thin form with a pair of biconically drilled suspension holes bored through the surface, likely to be worn around the neck or in the hair as ornamentation. Next are 2 ovoid pieces with flat bases boasting incredibly smooth surfaces. These stones were perhaps used as tools for burnishing pottery or were perhaps preforms for larger, thicker gorgets that had not yet been drilled through for suspension. Size of largest: 5.5" L x 1.125" W (14 cm x 2.9 cm)

Provenance: private Kansas City, Missouri, USA collection; ex-John Townsend collection, formed in the 1970's and earlier; (dark stone) found by Arlin Cargill in Saline County, Missouri
