Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE; Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 850 to 1600 CE. A set of 4 hand-built and highly burnished pottery vessels from ancient South America. First are 3 Narino redware pottery jars - a petite rectangular jar with a pair of pierced lug handles, a spherical jar with a flared rim, and a large spherical jar with faint remains of negative resist motifs. The blackware vessel is of Manteno origin and has 3 pairs of nubbin protuberances around the circumference as well as incised lines and stippling atop the shoulder. Size of largest: 4.85" W x 3.875" H (12.3 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-private Arkansas, USA collection, via descent in 2021; ex-private Florida estate, USA, acquired from the 1960s to 1970s

  • Condition: Rectangular vessel has small repair to rim and stabilization to fissure, and smaller spherical jar has loss to one loop handle; larger spherical jar and Manteno jar are intact and very good. Each vessel has light abrasions, encrustations, and fading to pigment. Nice preservation to overall forms and good earthen deposits throughout.
