Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Narino culture, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A set of 3 hand-built pottery bowls with flared feet and broad basins. Two of the bowls are decorated with a russet red pigment as well as faint black linear motifs around the exterior of the body in negative resist. The largest bowl features a vibrant negative resist motif in black and red hues atop the cream ground that boasts linear, triangular, and concentric circles patterns within the basin. Size of largest: 7.8" W x 3.625" H (19.8 cm x 9.2 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000; ex-Francisco Jose Olano collection

  • Condition: Repairs to largest bowl with chipping and light adhesive residue along break lines. Chip to rim of 1 red bowl; second red bowl is intact and very good. Each piece has abrasions, fading to pigment, and light earthen deposits. Previous collection labels beneath foot of each, with "Colombia" handwritten beneath foot of both red bowls.
