Near East / Central Asia, Islamic Culture, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A collection of 2 brass and 1 silver prayer boxes known as tawiz or hirz, worn like lockets for protection throughout Central Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East, in mainly Islamic and some Hindu cultures. The hollow tubes have removable lids to carry paper prayers or other spiritual items inside. The longest has delicate silver wirework decorations, and the shorter brass ones are etched with linear motifs. Size of longest: 5" L x 0.75" W (12.7 cm x 1.9 cm); silver quality: 89.43%; weight: 34.9 grams

  • Condition: Indentations and small perforations to surfaces. Missing a few filigree / raised decoration on the largest. Modern wire is used to attached one box to the chain. Rubbing and surface wear and patina. Good antique / vintage and pre-owned condition.
