Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE; El Salvador and Honduras, Maya Territories, Proto-Maya, Pre-Classic period, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE; Gulf Coast of Mexico, Western Yucatan Peninsula, Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine set of three hand-built pottery pieces from across ancient Mesoamerica. First is a Tlatilco bust bearing nubbin arms as well as coffee bean eyes, a bulbous nose, and impressed brow ornaments. Next is a Proto Maya figure of squat form with slit-form eyes and mouth, a triangular head, and thick arms, all covered in faint remains of red pigment. Last is a Maya Jaina pottery head depicting a peaceful visage covered in red-orange pigment. Size of largest (Maya Jaina head): 2.625" H (6.7 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private collection of actor Anthony Quinn and his wife Katherine, Bristol, Rhode Island, USA acquired prior to 2000

  • Condition: Maya Jaina head and Tlatilco bust are fragments of larger compositions as shown. Chips to face and verso of Maya Jaina head, with losses to arms and legs of Tlatilco bust, and small chip near legs of Proto Maya figure. Softening to some finer details, fading to surface pigment where applicable, and light encrustations. Nice preservation to overall forms.
