Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan or Sarawak region, Dayak people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A fine trio of carving knives known as pisau raut (literally "rattan knife") used for whittling the plentiful rattan found in the region. Each knife has a narrow steel carving blade and a slender handle bearing an intricate finial. First is a wooden handle with an openwork, feather-shaped finial. Second is a wooden handle with a brass end cap and a carved deer antler finial depicting a crouching human and a crawling lizard. The largest is has a blade with smoothed brass studs on one side and a handle exhibiting two abstract zoomorphic creatures. Size of largest (blade w/ brass): 19.2" L x 0.875" W (48.8 cm x 2.2 cm)

  • Condition: Blade of handle with openwork finial reattached with light adhesive residue along blade shoulder. Brass cap and deer antler finial likely not original to their respective knife. All items have minor abrasions to handles and knives, very slight bending to blades, and light encrustations on blades. Nice patina throughout.
