Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Kalimantan or Sarawak region, Dayak people, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A gathering of three carving knives known as pisau raut (literally "rattan knife") used for whittling the plentiful rattan found in the region. Each knife has a hand-carved wooden handle and a forged-steel blade with a sharpened edge on one end. The first knife has a braided rattan ring around the lower body and an integral reptilian finial on top. The second knife has a carved deer antler ring above the blade and antler finial with a similar reptilian head. The largest knife has a braided rattan ring around the deer antler finial that depicts an abstract seated figure with a conical zoomorphic headdress. Size of largest (figural finial): 1.125" W x 17.875" H (2.9 cm x 45.4 cm)

  • Condition: Figural finial on largest knife likely not original to handle. All items have minor nicks and abrasions to handles, finials, and blades, with light pitting to blades, and softening to some carved details on finials. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
