Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE; Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz, Remojadas, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A collection of 3 pottery heads once part of larger figures made by ancient Mexican cultures. The pair of Veracruz terracotta heads are characteristically broad with flared headdresses and ear spools, the largest has a somewhat sinister smile revealing faint pointed teeth and narrow tongue - teeth filing was a popular practice in Remojadas culture. The elongated head is a distinctly different style, likely Jalisco, with bulging cheeks, prominent nose, narrow eyes, earrings, and applied cap headdress with an opening vent that leads into the hollow head. The surface is finished in a buff and red hue and highly burnished. Size (larger Veracruz head): 5.75" L x 4.25" W (14.6 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
