Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 500 to 100 BCE; Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine ensemble of 4 hand-built, pottery female figures: 3 Jalisco and 1 Michoacan. Known as "pretty ladies," all 4 are depicted standing atop straight legs with arms folded inward and hands on body or head. The ancient figures are nude, save for a necklace, earrings, and an elaborate headdress, as they gaze forth from slanted eyes. Each woman displays a sizeable head with a stylized countenance, though one Jalisco figure appears to be holding objects in her hands and another Jalisco female presents a bulbous posterior and a bulging, pregnant belly. The largest figure is from Michoacan culture. Size of largest: 1.3" W x 3.1" H (3.3 cm x 7.9 cm)
