Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Hopi Pueblo, ca. mid to late 20th CE. A group of three wooden kachina Koshare dolls and a watermelon, dressed in leather, cloth, and artificial hair, in ascending sizes. The 2 smaller figures are separate from the largest, and they are all slightly stooped with jeering faces. The largest is mounted on a wooden base, and the figures may have been intended to nest against each other. The base is signed "Hopi Clown Kachina by P.S. Foster." This kachina is a sacred jester or trickster spirit, and dancers dressed as Koshare will often parody and mock the audience to both invoke laughter and ridicule; they may also throw the watermelon at watchers! While humorous, the performances are meant as serious social commentaries. Size of largest: 11" W x 22.25" H (27.9 cm x 56.5 cm)
