Description:

Africa, Madagascar, late Cretaceous, ca. 145 to 66 million years ago; Morocco, Devonian Period, ca. 419.2 to 358.9 million years ago. A collection of fossils, 3 sliced and polished halves of ammonites and an Orthoceras. The ammonites appear to be all in the Cleaniceras genus with tightly coiled shells that are split and polished, revealing the fascinating interior whorl pattern, sutures and vugs (cavities filled with crystals). The polished black stone matrix contains fossilized shells from Orthoceras, a prehistoric cephalopod! The elongated, horn-like shells once protected the soft flesh and tentacles of the Orthoceras, and the shells here are from deceased creatures that fell to the ocean floor where they were covered with sediment and fossilized. The white quartzite shell fragments here are given a high polish to better view the fossils. Size of ammonites: 5.5" Diameter x 0.6" W (14 cm x 1.5 cm)
