Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A fine gathering of 3 hand-built pottery vessels from ancient Panama. First is a footed bowl with angular walls, a thick rim, and abstract linear bands - some with serrations - in hues of black adorned with purple and red pigments on a cream ground. Next is a spherical jar featuring an abstract zoomorphic creature with clawed arms, bulging eyes, and spots and scales all brought forth with black pigment. The largest vessel is a pedestal dish with a massive, flared foot beneath a shallow bowl. Within the bowl are 2 sections of serrated curvilinear bands, and the rim is decorated with 3 banded sections. Size (pedestal dish): 5.875" W x 4.3" H (14.9 cm x 10.9 cm); (spherical jar): 4.58" Diameter x 4.25" H (11.6 cm x 10.8 cm); (footed bowl): 5.1" W x 2.8" H (13 cm x 7.1 cm)

  • Condition: Footed bowl has small chips around foot, and spherical jar has stabilization to 1 lengthy fissure stretching across shoulder and body; pedestal dish is intact and very good. Each vessel has small nicks and abrasions, with light encrustations, and fading to pigment in scattered areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Footed bowl and pedestal dish have old inventory numbers written on tape fragments within feet.
