Description:

Central Italy, Etruscan culture and Bulgaria, Northern Thrace, ca. 800 to 700 BCE. This is a fine collection of cast and forged bronze fibulas with crescent or boat shapes and coiled tips. The largest is a grand, U-shaped form with a thick body, the upper terminal curls around on itself before ending in a sizable, H-shaped catch plate. The plate is decorated with an incised V shaped lines and on the verso is a protruding panel that acted as the clasp and held a lengthy pin at one time. The other two fibula are missing their clasps as well as pins, but the remains of the coiled wire that once functioned like spring for the pin is intact. All three have a beautiful green and brown patina and are displayed in a modern Riker case. Fibulae like these were used by the Greeks, Etruscans, Romans, and other ancient people from the earliest times until late antiquity to pin garments such as togas or chitons at the shoulder. Size (largest fibula): 2.5" L x 1.75" W (6.4 cm x 4.4 cm); (Riker case): 8.75" L x 6.5" W (22.2 cm x 16.5 cm)
