Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE; Central Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 1345 to 1521 CE. A fine set of 4 hand-built pottery smoking pipes, 3 from the Aztec Empire and 1 from the ancient Chupicuaro people. The Chupicuaro pipe is conical in form with incised receptacle walls and a pair of bifurcated suspension lugs. The 3 Aztec pipes all exhibit deep red slip: 1 bears a series of 3 hemispherical nodules along the pipe stem; another bears the head of a stylized zoomorph in front of the receptacle; and the largest features a knotted cord motif along the upper section. Size of largest (Aztec): 12.625" L x 1.6" W (32.1 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: Private New York, New York, USA collection; Ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

  • Condition: Repair to small area of upper rim of Chupicuaro pipe; repair to stem of Aztec pipe with zoomorphic head; and largest Aztec pipe repaired from 3 pieces; all with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Smallest Aztec pipe is intact and very good. Loss to finger rest and one ear of zoomorphic head on zoomorphic pipe as shown. All pieces have light encrustations within receptacles and abrasions to exterior pigmentation. Nice preservation of overall forms. Pipes are not recommended for use.
