India, Mathura, ca. 2nd century CE. This is a lovely flecked stone fragment of a figure wearing a necklace and with a tight short hairdo, holding a musical instrument to its right shoulder. Size: 7.6" H (19.3 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Collection of Will Barnet, (b. 1925) an American artist known for his paintings, watercolors, drawings, and prints depicting casual scenes of daily life and in transcendent dreamlike worlds. A longtime resident of the National Arts Club, Barnet died in New York City on November 13, 2012, at the age of 101.
