Description:

Central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A delightful schist panel featuring the relief of a figure - perhaps a monk - striding beneath a pointed archway filled with floral and vegetal motifs as well as clusters of grapes on each side. A supporting column with projecting brackets is featured at the left, and incised lattice motif decoration adorns the verso. Size: 3.8" W x 5" H (9.7 cm x 12.7 cm)

A schist panel of similar composition was listed by Bonham's New York as lot 635 on September 23rd, 2020 with the estimated price of $8,000 to $12,000. Additionally, several comparable examples can be found at the British Museum, such as museum numbers 1917,1009.7, 1880.206, 1880.214, 1880.203, 1880.211, and 1888.0901.3.
