Description:

India / Pakistan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. Large and quite lovely gray schist stone carving of the seated Atlas. While this region of Asia was conquered by Alexander the Great five centuries earlier, this region continued to combine elements of Buddhist Asia with those of ancient Greece in its art and artifacts for centuries to come. Atlas is shown seated upon a large platform, right knee bent and held by his right hand, left leg curled in front of him resting upon a cloth garment, left hand upon his thigh. He shows great musculature and would need it to hold the world aloft for the rest of eternity. A lovely example! Size: 10.5" W x 13" H (26.7 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection formed before 1990
