Central Asia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Northern India, Gandhara / Kushan Empire, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A schist fragment hand-carved in high relief from a frieze or larger statue, depicting a man's head in front of a second standing figure, the clasped hands and torso just visible. The man's mustachioed face is framed by a halo, and he may represent Buddha / a Bodhisattva – this fragment perhaps once part of a religious scene, perhaps residing in a temple or palace. Size: 3.5" L x 2.75" W x 3.75" H (8.9 cm x 7 cm x 9.5 cm); 4.5" H (11.4 cm) on included custom stand.
