Description:

Native American, United States, Eastern Woodland, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A wonderful collection of 26 knapped arrow heads or spear tips made from black obsidian and slate. The collection displays a nice array of forms. Most exhibit a triangular blade with a notched neck and short fins. Their petite sizes demanded immense skill to create each one - a single mistake could ruin the whole blade. Two arrowheads are made from a matte gray slate, while the rest are formed from obsidian with nearly translucent edges. The process for shaping these points involved hitting a harder stone against the surface to flake or knap these arrowheads into the desired form. Given their petite size, these pretty pieces may have had ritualistic and ceremonial rather than utilitarian use. Size of smallest: .375" L x .25" W (1 cm x 0.6 cm); size of largest: 1.5" L x .5" W (3.8 cm x 1.3 cm); size of case: 4.5" L x 5.5" W x 1" H (11.4 cm x 14 cm x 2.5 cm)
