Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A collection of 26 hand-knapped obsidian pieces from ancient Colima, mainly blades and scrapers, as well as a curved pendant with drilled suspension holes, and a rounded, flaked shard. Obsidian was an important resource in ancient Mesoamerica, traded far from its source in the volcanic zones of the Sierra Madre in Mexico and Guatemala, and prized for its razor-sharp qualities. Size of thickest: 4.5" L x 1.75" W (11.4 cm x 4.4 cm); smallest shard: 0.75" L x 0.5" W (1.9 cm x 1.3 cm)
