Description:

Native American, United States, Archaic to Woodland periods, ca. 1000 BCE to 1500 CE. A collection of 21 hand-knapped stone projectile points, awls, and blades, each made from chert or quartzite. Included are several types of points and most appear to be fully formed, many with necks, notches, and fins- each clearly worked by flaking and knapping. Knapped lithics, like these examples, are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get them the correct shape requires training and skill. The largest blade in this collection is a recent recreation of a "Wintu type" blade using flaking techniques, but with the aid of metal and other non-traditional tools - a collectible and artistic exploration of the craft. All are displayed in a modern Riker case. Size (large quartzite notched blade): 3.5" L x 1.25" W (8.9 cm x 3.2 cm); (case): 12.125" L x 8.125" W (30.8 cm x 20.6 cm)
