Africa, Yoruba, Nigeria and Benin, 1st half 20th century CE. This is a wooden Agere Ifa, a container for storing sacred palm nuts used in divination. The bowl is supported by an antelope in a bowing posture with large eyes and ears. Agere Ifa are sometimes given by clients to diviners as thanks with some meaning behind their design; antelope are creatures seen as daring, of the wild landscape rather than the domesticated human world. Size: 5.5" W x 7.2" H (14 cm x 18.3 cm)
