Description:

West Africa, Mali, Senufo people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A tall, abstractly-depicted wooden bird with a central high crest, two round, bulging eyes, a long beak that flows from the crest to touch the puffed out chest, and a very long neck. The body has folded wings with incised lines giving the impression of feathers, and stands on long, stork-like legs, with a rounded base instead of naturalistic feet. Bird figures are associated with the Poro society, a grouping of initiated, young Senufo men that prepares them for their roles as adults. Figures like this one are carried in processions and sometimes worn on the head (hence the rounded base). Size: 5.9" W x 29" H (15 cm x 73.7 cm)
