Description:

West Africa, ca. early 20th century CE. A large iron object shaped like a musical instrument and made to be used as currency. West Africa (and other parts of the continent) has a long history of metal trade currencies; these are often based on bartered objects, but have intrinsic worth because the metal can be melted down or recycled. Iron, which is abundant across the continent, was considered more valuable if it could be shaped into an object. Objects like these tell us how goods were bought and sold by the people of this region, even after the introduction of European currencies among white traders and colonists. Comes with a custom base made of Indian teak. Size: 10" L x 7" W x 35.5" H (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 90.2 cm)
