Description:

Eastern Africa, Uganda, Ganda or Hima people, ca. early to mid 20th century. A wooden container for cow's milk made by the nomadic Ganda or Hima peoples. Only the men actually milked the animal, but the women used these elegantly shaped vessels when adding herbs and other spices to flavor the liquid. This example features incised geometric decoration around the lower body as well as tin sheet used to repair one side in two areas. This repair was done by the people who made the piece and is characteristic for this type of vessel. A finely woven fiber lid with a nipple-like form sits atop the vessel. Size: 6.5" W x 9.5" H (16.5 cm x 24.1 cm)
