Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 20th century CE. This is a vibrant textile thangka made from a silk batik dyed panel painted with a wrathful deity, and silk brocade and cotton appliques. The brocade pieces are each hand stitched on a maroon red and floral cotton backing and hemmed at the tips into a pointed shape that overlaps the panel below. The demon is likely the wrathful deity Mahakala, a fierce form of Vishnu, known as the "Great Black One" or "Great Time." Time is believed to be the destroyer of all things in Tibetan mythology and is therefore symbolic of death and destruction. Thangka serve as teaching tools, but also as focal points for devotion when brought out during a ritual. They also can be used for meditation, allowing the viewer to focus on the scene at hand and put away earthly distractions. Size: 42" L x 37" W (106.7 cm x 94 cm)
