Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful brass prayer wheel with a slender handle with a pin protruding from the top, a spinning cylindrical barrel, a heavy bead attached to a thin chain, and a conical finial with small rattle beads within. The ballasted bead enables the upper cylinder to spin effortlessly when put into motion, enabling a Buddhist patron to concentrate on his/her meditative prayers rather than keeping the spinning cylinder in motion. The bottom panel of the cylinder displays a series of Tibetan lettering, and the sides and top are densely decorated with spiraled brass strips as well as inlaid pale blue and bright red stones. Size: 8.5" L x 2.25" W (21.6 cm x 5.7 cm).
