East Asia, Tibet or China, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is a lovely bovine or ungulate bone and nickel-silver snuff jar. The bone is hollowed through the center and hand carved on the exterior with an intricate scene of elephants, lions, and deer running through a leafy jungle. The base of the cylindrical bone vessel is capped with a nickel silver plate and the lid is also formed of nickel-silver, with a brass chain and the finial of scoop - the actual stick implement is absent. Snuff jars would contain powdered tobacco to use as a medicinal remedy. Size: 4" L x 1.85" W (10.2 cm x 4.7 cm)
