East Africa, Tanzania, Nyamwezi peoples, ca. 20th century CE. A fine wooden trough zither or 5-string harp from the Nyamwezi - the largest ethnic group among the tribes in north-central Tanzania. The hand-carved instrument displays an elongated body with a recessed bowl over which the strings would be stretched. All is surmounted by an anthropomorphic figure known as a Zoromo presenting with a bulbous head, a slender body, articulated arms, and inset bead eyes. Stringed instruments like this example play a crucial role in many religious and secular ceremonial functions, including dance, rituals and story-telling. Size: 21.9" L x 2.7" H (55.6 cm x 6.9 cm); 23.2" H (58.9 cm) on included custom stand.
