Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, Nias or Ono Niha people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. This is an interesting squatting figure cast from brass, to represent a male ancestral figure. The man is nude, balancing in a squatting position with his legs slightly spread and his genitalia is prominent. He bends slightly forward with his hands on his chest - note his lizard like 3 fingers and toes - and he has an overside head with a stylized visage. His elongated face is comprised of an incised U-shaped smiling mouth, narrow nose, and bulging eyes under a crescent shaped headdress. His ears are elongated and pierced to receive additional ornaments, and the center of his head has a nodular protrusion. The man is well balanced and can stand upright upon the integral, flat base. Ancestor figures were created to house the spirit of the deceased and they were believed to watch over the family and land- ensuring fertility and protection. Size: 2.25" L x 2.5" W x 7.5" H (5.7 cm x 6.4 cm x 19 cm)
