Description:

Central Asia, Sino-Tibetan, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A gilt cast-bronze depiction of the goddess Tara seated in the lalitsana pose on a lotus with a single row of petals on the base, her right foot forward and resting on a smaller attached lotus. She wears a jeweled tiara with her hair in a topknot, with lotus stalks and stylized flowers grasped in her hands and raised behind her arms. Sashes and flowing garments drape down across her nude chest, with several inlaid turquoise and carnelian stones set within her earrings, tiara, necklace, and arm bands. The bodhisattva Tara is a hugely popular Vajrayana deity who accompanies the rise of Tantra in 8th century CE India and is viewed as a combination of "Mother of all Buddhas" as well as the Indian concept of a mother goddess. Size: 4.5" W x 6.5" H (11.4 cm x 16.5 cm).
