Description:

Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A globular-bodied ceramic vessel on a flat, disc-shaped base, a flared waist, a tapered neck, and a wide, gently turned out rim. Around the neck is an intricate design of dark red on white that resembles a labyrinth. The lower body is painted dark red. Shipibo vessels are visually distinctive and instantly recognizable, the result of a tempering technology that is millennia old, allowing for some of the largest vessels with remarkably thin walls produced in the New World. These vessels are made by Shipibo women in a style that grew out of the pre-Columbian Marajoara. Size: 12.6" W x 10" H (32 cm x 25.4 cm)
