Description:

Oceania, Polynesia, Samoa, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely hand-carved wooden boat oar known as a "foe" (literally "paddle") with a stocky handle, a diamond-shaped paddle with a shallow midrib, and a rounded tip. Both sides of the paddle are colored with vibrant red-orange paint. Foe were carved from carefully-chosen wooden planks to make the structural design as sturdy yet lightweight as possible. Size: 57.9" L x 9.3" W (147.1 cm x 23.6 cm).
