Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A delightful wooden traveling icon hand-sculpted to look like a book that folds out to a triptych displaying the images of Mary Mother of God, Saint George, and Saint Nicholas, all delineated in vibrant hues of egg tempera on gesso with lustrous brass details. The cover of the triptych presents the relief of the head of Christ, depicted haloed with eyes downcast in a solemn expression as though during the Crucifixion. Size when closed: 3.8" L x 1.6" W x 4.6" H (9.7 cm x 4.1 cm x 11.7 cm); when open: 11.4" L x 0.5" W x 4.6" H (29 cm x 1.3 cm x 11.7 cm)

  • Condition: Hinge between second and third panels broken leaving third panel detached. Some expected nicks and abrasions, as well as minor chipping to tempera and gesso in areas, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with great pigments and soft patina.
