Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. mid 20th century CE. A cloisonne enamel kovsch, a ceremonial drinking vessel, in the form of a graceful swan dipping its head down to drink, with a blue and white neck and a silver tail with cloisonne tail feathers in pink, white, green, and dark blue. The swan's body - the body of the vessel - is mainly a deep green, with pink flowers around it, is above a scalloped lower body. The underside is stamped with a mark meaning that this is .925 silver. Size: 6.05" L x 2.25" W x 3.25" H (15.4 cm x 5.7 cm x 8.3 cm)

The kovsh is a traditional Russian drinking vessel in the form of a stylized boat, perhaps based upon Viking longships. One end is a pointed prow, the other a handle, around an elongated ovoid bowl. Although the form is centuries old, used originally for drinking mead, by the 19th century, it had become stylized, and specifically made to be a gift from the tsar for services to the state.

From the mid-19th century to the early 20th, Russian art of all kinds experienced a renaissance that is known as the Silver Age. Russian artisans were inspired by the Gothic, the Moresque, Chinoiserie, the Baroque, the Rococo… all ornate styles replete with scrolling vines and flourishing arches. They combined this with the bright colors and rich ornament of Old Russian applied art to create a unique style of which silver items are some of the most enduring.
