Papua New Guinea, Munk Lake, ca. early 20th century CE. A pair of double pedestal mortars, finely carved from a dark hardwood and showing nice remaining red pigment, one supported by two standing spirit figures, nude save their ornate crowns, the other by two near-identical ovoid masks with expressive long-nosed visages. Both mortars and one of the bases are also adorned with intricate stylized geometrics, possibly clan signs. A rare pair. Size: 2.5" W x 5" H (6.4 cm x 12.7 cm)
