Description:

Papua New Guinea (PNG), Middle Sepik River Region, ca. middle of the 20th century. Portable wooden split drum carved from single piece of wood. On one side, an ancestral figure looks heavenward, his face painted in bold strokes of white creating a very intimidating presence. The other side is in the form of an animal or bird head with added white pigments. One side of the drum has deeply carved ghostly faces, one with added cowry bead eyes. The other side with abstract pattern that is reminiscent of a wave pattern. In the center of the drum is a large appendage used to adjust or defuse the sound when the drum is struck. Drum shows areas of nice patina and usage. Size: 27" L x 11.5" H (68.6 cm x 29.2 cm)
