Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. first half of 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance helmet in the form of a large bird known as a cassowary. The avian figure presents with a crested body, a thick tail protruding from the verso, a lengthy neck, and a conical head with a huge beak, all painted with red, blue, and yellow pigments atop a dark-brown ground. Several slots meant for holding additional feathers are drilled into the arching back, sides, top of head, and tail. The headdress portion consists of four slanted bars which are wrapped at the bottom along a circular bottom, and small feathers adorn the sides of the headdress and cassowary body. Size: 18.4" L x 8.375" W x 10.375" H (46.7 cm x 21.3 cm x 26.4 cm).
