Description:

Papua New Guinea, Middle Sepik River, early-mid 20th century CE. This is an atl atl, a weapon with a tremendous history and that is still used today in Papua New Guinea and other places throughout the world. The shaft is made of bamboo; the thumb guide is made of a darker wood and is in the form of a crocodile's head; this may relate to the symbol of a particular clan. An atl atl functions as an extension of the throwing arm, creating additional leverage for thrower. The spear would be fitted into the bamboo shaft, with the thumb guide holding the spear in place until it is thrown. Size: 26" L (66 cm)
